Wolf’s Lair

Wolf’s Lair (Gierłoż, 11-400 Ketrzyn) — located 3 1/2 hours north of Warsaw, various travel outfits provide tours of this unique World War II-era site:  “Wolf’s Lair” (a.k.a. “wolfschanze” — the former headquarters of Nazi invader Adolf Hitler).  This was a hidden city consisting of nearby 200 buildings, including shelters, barracks, two airports, a power station, a train station, and water works (all built by the German invaders within a short period after their invasion of Poland). An assassination attempt against Hitler also occurred here (highlighted in the 2008 Tom Cruise Hollywood film “Valkyrie”).  The following companies provide tours to this historically significant site:  www.realpoland.eu;  www.intopoland.com;  www.alpventures.com; www.warsawtraveltours.com

Festival Wianki nad Wisłą

Wianki nad Wisłą Festival (Wreaths on the Vistula)(Warsaw) — this is a family picnic inspired by the Slavic tradition of celebrating the Kupala Night (Midsummer night), during which in the times of yore, among joyful celebrations, dances and divination, the girls were floating wreaths of flowers with lit candles on the rivers (“wianki” literally means “wreaths”)

The program of the picnic is dominated by recreation and entertainment. There is a strong representation of traditional Polish folk art and cuisine. The event also gives a promotional opportunity to young musical bands; one of the pivotal points of the evening is the Garlands Star Gala – a concert of artists of worldwide and countrywide fame.
